Streaming Media Committee
1st draft
7/13/2016
Scope and Purpose – The purpose of this publication is to provide concise information on policy and procedures for those cataloging and processing streaming media for Utah State University’s Merrill-Cazier Library. RDA rules will be used in most instances as well as ISBD punctuation.
Streaming Media (audio or video) – Audio or video files transmitted over a network that can be played on a user’s computer immediately, without a downloaded file. These streamed files are transmitted as a data stream, with a small amount sent in advance and stored in a buffer, and otherwise played as they are received by the user’s computer. After the files are played, they are deleted immediately from the user’s computer.
Information/Materials needed -- URL for stream, Terms of access, Authentication requirements.
Prescribed Sources of Information – RDA rules call for choosing a source of information “identifying the resource as a whole.” In most cases this will be a title screen or a comprehensive introductory screen. Use a note to indicate where the title information came from:
588 |a Description based on online resource; title from title screen (viewed October 26, 1998).
Fixed Fields
When creating an RDA record, make sure there is an i in the desc field. Also enter rda into the |e subfield of the 040 field.
040 UUS |b eng |e rda |c UUS
Dates – Usually would use s if only a single date is associated with the video. Otherwise, p might be used where Date1 is the date of the release of the video and Date2 would be the original production of the film.
Time – This should match the duration of the video as indicated in the 300 field in parentheses. If the duration is not available or a reasonable estimate not possible, leave this out and enter 3 dashes, Time - - -
Physical characteristics fields
Most streaming videos will require 1 006 field and 2 007 fields. To enter the 006 field, click in the space to the right of the 006 indicator, choose the edit pull-down menu, choose Guided entry, then choose insert 006, and select Computer Files for entry.
From the workform, enter for,
type : m
form : o
file : c
To enter an 007 field, click in the space to the right in the 007 field, choose Tools pull-down menu, select macros, then Manage, click on the +OCLC, then Add&edit007, then run.
For the first 007, choose videorecording (v), and enter according to this chart:

Check for a publisher number. Enter this into the 028 field with the publisher’s name in the b subfield. The first indicator should be 4, 2nd indicator should be 2:
028 42 [publisher number] |b [publisher name]
100/110 & 700/710 fields
In most cases, videos will have mixed or unknown responsibility. There are a few movies/productions that are well known in which case a main entry in the 1xx field would be appropriate. More often than not, you will use Title Main Entry. Make added entries for all openly named persons or corporate authors who have contributed to the creation of the video, that is, producers, directors, writers, animators, creators, and so forth. If applicable, place the director or creator as the first 700 field so it appears first in the list of those responsible and in the truncated browse list of the catalog.
Make added entries for all corporate authors named in the credits. Make added wntries for all featured players, performers, and narrators. If there are many players, performers, and narrators, make entries for only the prominent ones.
041 field
Most often used when translations are involved. However, many videos utilize subtitles. Language codes for subtitles can be entered into the |j subfield.
