Extract a spreadsheet from MarcEdit batch file; then search numbers using Sierra Create Lists

10/27/2023

Example: extracting 024 (and a few other check fields) to search an earlier form of 001 standard number for Alexander Street Press video delete files

In MarcEdit: tools->Export->Export Tab Delimited Records

Open from Excel

  • Open; navigate to new file (This PC); then whereever you parked your file

  • Choose All files in dropdown

ignore Other in the screenshot above
Oh thank heavens, we can stop Excel doing that!
Mark and copy the 001 and 024 columns and move to a new tab

Select 024 tab and go to Data tab
Text to Columns
I keep telling Excel, do not treat these number, but it doesn't listen
See it messes them up, but it turns out we don’t need them!

If we needed the messes up numbers: Right click, choose Format cells;

move decimal places to zero
HIghlight 024 column; Edit; Sort A to Z
Expand the selection

scroll down to missing ASPs

highlight the missing ASP old control numbers and move into missing 024’s

Now, copy new column of 024 old-style control numbers and paste into Notebook or similar text file

save that file:

hurray! now close it and go to Sierra

Sierra; Create Lists;

choose an EMPTY line; don’t forget, or you could erase someone else’s work

Import file; using Index -> control number

Click on Load:

Once all the ASP numbers are loaded; click Import

Hurray!
