Music Scores - Laminating in Detail

Square-back scores (or perfect-bound, saddlestitched, etc.) with flimsy covers will need lamination. If covers are substantial enough to hold up on the shelf and frequent handling, don't worry about laminating them.

Some popular music spiral-bound scores can be laminated using two back laminate sheets (but not the front cover laminate sheets). Make sure not to cover the holes at the spine.

Cataloging staff are responsible for music laminating.

1. Reinforce the inner hinges of the cover with Kapco's "Easy Bind" tape: remove the center backing and set a ruler into the tape to push it into the hinge, then remove the backing from one side, pressing it down evenly, then the other. Smooth out bubbles and folds.

   • When laminating a spiral or comb bound score, skip the first step.

2. For the back cover, slide the back laminate sheet under the score, with the front cover of the score facing up, and leaving at least ¾ inch from inside the spine edge, measure & mark the paper side of the laminate sheet.

   • However, when laminating a spiral or comb bound score: measure only up to the holes (leaving about 1/4 cm between the laminate and the holes).

   • When laminating a spiral or comb bound score: Measure & mark a back laminate sheet for both front & back cover.

3. Measure & mark the front cover (with the back cover facing up) against the longer front cover laminate sheet (with a flexible edge that will wrap around the spine): allow for ¾ inch into the flexible edge.

   • When laminating a spiral/comb bound score, ignore this step.

4. Use a paper cutter for each piece. If they are too large for our paper cutter, use another library department's paper cutter, or if you have a steady hand, use scissors to cut the sheets.

Separate parts:

Parts issued with a laminated score will either need a simple pocket made for gluing to the score’s inside back cover, or, in some cases, where the parts are too large to fit inside the back cover, will need a pamphlet made for square-back or very thick scores; see binding procedures: https://usulibrary.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ULC/pages/1329168442

Square-backed laminated score with simple back pocket on the inside back cover. Possible only with a thin part, unless stubbed pages have been inserted by the publisher in the spine

Simple Pocket instructions:

For a relatively thin part.

Glue to back cover, then insert wax paper to keep the front and folded pieces of the pocket from gluing together. Press overnight.
