Non Music CDs - Cataloging quick guide

Non-musical audio CD cataloging:

Scope of collection:

The Library Media Collection files non-music audio compact discs with recordings of spoken stories, autobiography, poetry, plays, interviews, radio shows, lectures & speeches, etc., plus natural sounds in an area separate from music audio CDs. Birdsong, whale song, coyote and wolf howls, etc., and rain, wind, traffic, or any ambient sound is considered non-musical sounds (unless a modern composer is presenting it as music).

General note:

Descriptive and subject cataloging for non-musical CDs is similar to music CDs cataloging, with the exception of these fields:

Fixed fields:

Type: i (for non-music recording)

Lang: human spoken words only; if anything else, like natural or animal sounds: zxx

Form: blank

Comp: nn (not a music recording)

AccM: accompanying material

LTxt: see chart below (or Bib Formats and Standards/MARC21)

Fmus, Part, & TrAr: check that all are coded n

Classification will be according to the genre (literary recordings) or subject of the recording. Poetry, literature, and plays would be classified in the P's,
Animal sounds and birdsong in QL.
Etc.
Within the LMC area, CDs are shelved in the pull-out shelves next to the Class Reserve CDs.
